Synthesis, in collaboration with the Laberge Group and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Consulting Engineers, Inc., received another award from the New York Upstate Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (NYU ASLA). The Peekskill Southern Waterfront – Tidal Pool, received a Merit Award for Unbuilt Design.

The Tidal Pool complex is part of the Peekskill Southern Waterfront project. The design improvements for this part of the park, identified as the Riverfront Green South, would include a diverse tidal pool complex that provides aesthetic, artistic and educational opportunities. The area is a nearly vacant stretch of lawn, with a few scattered trees and a degraded shoreline that is unstable and subject to erosion. This segment of parkland was created by filling in what was historically part of a larger estuarine system.

The intent of the design was not only to create usable space, frame important views and develop focal points, but also to marry nature and art through the creation of an estuarine tidal pool complex. The philosophy behind the design was rooted in the re-creation and celebration of the once existing natural environment, with the tidal pool itself expressed as a forward looking sculptural landscape feature.
The Awards Jury stated “Functionally this concept is very strong, …allowing the tide thorough access while pulling the pedestrian into the space.” “Nice Design. Good overlook detailing. Great lighting idea.”
