Working with the Town of Niskayuna and business and property owners under a New York State Quality Communities Demonstration Program grant, Synthesis created a Master Plan for the revitalization of this thriving neighborhhood commercial area. The Plan and associated report produced by Synthesis provide a guide for future improvements.
The street lacked an organized streetscape plan and pedestrian amenities The too-wide roadway resulted in chaotic traffic and parking patterns. The conceptual streetscape plan developed by Synthesis, illustrated below, addresses these concerns and gives the street a distinctive identity through the use of coordinated design elements.
Synthesis recommended narrowing the wide swath of poorly defined roadway from 44 to 37 feet to allow for the planting of street trees to create rhythm and unity and for a gracious sidewalk with curved, brick-paved seating areas defined with low walls, decorative planting urns, fencing, and benches. New pedestrian scale lighting complements the plan.
An entry feature was designed for the eastern entrance to the area with planted granite-curbed islands holding a decorative metalwork entry sign, and a brick-paved plaza that includes low walls with integral benches, planting areas with shrubs, and decorative planting urns.
