The challenge of the project was creating a space that would unite a dormitory
building, the recently completed new recital hall, the arts building, and the
theater while providing usable passive and active outdoor spaces and permitting
an adequate network of pedestrian and vehicular circulation routes.
Synthesis proposed a courtyard design that responded to the College’s
desire to create an outdoor space uniting the disparate user groups and circulation
needs. The design features a raised grass glade that will provide intimate
open space for students to gather, chat, sunbath, and study. The glade is
shielded from the vehicular drive and the activities of the outdoor sculpture
courtyard by a grass berm, a cast iron fence and vegetation. The berm will
visually separate the driveway from the more passive activity space of the
glade, yet it will also visually connect the glade to the Jackson Gardens
in the distance.
The sculpture courtyard serves several important roles. First it provides
outdoor production space sculptural fabrication. Secondly the large paved
surface can be used for deliveries and vehicle access to all three of the
nearby buildings. Lastly open space for pedestrian circulation will allow
for easy navigation between the surrounding buildings.
Other features include a garden overlook above the Jackson Gardens, a gravel
path framing the grass glade and ample seating, and a shade garden in the
niche created by the North College Dorm, the music building, and the new recital
hall.
