Dormitory Residences at Union College

Synthesis was selected by Union College to renovate several homes on nearby Seward Place into attractive residences for students. Synthesis also designed the streetscape plan for Seward Place, a well-traveled link to dowtown Schenectady.

The streetscape design created a focal point at an important intersection leading into the College. The redesigned intersection provides a better sense of place and paving materials changes, from asphalt to brick and stone, slows traffic in the area.

The renovations of the residences and the site redesign provided a unique opportunity to design a streetscape with complemental residential and public spaces.

Champlin Dining Hall at SUNY Cobleskill

Synthesis provided architecture, interior design, and graphic design services for the renovation of an existing dining hall at SUNY Cobleskill. Referencing a previously developed rehabilitation study, Synthesis further developed the scope to cover the state codes and the institution’s current needs.

The design solution was planned to improve the environment of the entire dining facility, including three separate dining rooms and a serving area. Features include new flooring, ceiling designs, and in-house designed banners. Existing HVAC issues were addressed to improve ventilation and a new energy efficient lighting scheme was designed to improve illumination and ambiance.

Traffic and Pedestrian Study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Synthesis and Transportation Concepts were commissioned by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to develop a land use plan to incorporate proposed campus expansion, make pedestrian travel safer and enhance the intersection of Sage Avenue and 15th Streets, the sumbolic entrance into campus.

The plan includes landscaped “gateways” at appropriate entry points into the campus, integrates an improved transit hub for students and included the site design for a new visitor center. Synthesis also conducted a comprehensive analysis of parking facilities and provided recommendations for improvements.

Transportation Concepts, a transportation consulting firm, conducted traffic and circulation analysis of the streets adjacent to the campus and the campus road system, to develope a series of recommendations, designed to promote pedestrian safety and improve traffic circulation.

Study for New Classroom Building at Union College

Synthesis was retained by Union College to prepare a preliminary design and feasibility study for a new 45,000-square-foot state-of-the-art classroom building for its graduate MBA program. The program includes nine classroom and lecture spaces of various sizes and configurations emphasizing the use of technology and computers as learning tools.

A vertically-tiered design concept was developed to integrate circulation, lounge spaces, and faculty offices to enhance faculty and student interaction and learning. Staff and registrar offices were incorporated and conceived as central spaces convenient and accessible to students.
