Winner of the 2000 Design Honor Award from the Eastern New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Synthesis was part of a team proposing the design and construction of a new train station and transportation center in downtown Schenectady, New York. The project goal was to recreate the characteristics and functions of the former train station and revitalize and enrich downtown life.
The plan includes a four-story office building with retail along high-traffic streets and a main transportation building to replace the existing 1960's era train station. The new station would include a bus terminal and associated travel offices, a marketplace, museum, clock tower, and parking structure.
The new train station design reflects the Beaux-Arts architectural forms of a long-demolished historic station. A new connecting marketplace is reminiscent of the wrought-iron and glass train shelters of Europe. The airy building acts as a public space connector from the train station to a proposed transportation museum.
